Sam J. Alton
Attorney
Sam is from St. Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with undergraduate degrees in philosophy and psychology. He then obtained his law degree from Mizzou and, upon graduation, accepted a clerkship at the Missouri Court of Appeals with the Honorable Paul J. Simon. After clerking for Judge Simon, Sam served the City of St. Louis as an Assistant Circuit Attorney under Dee Joyce-Hayes and Jennifer Joyce trying, and winning, numerous jury trials. In 2002, Sam joined the law firm Gallop, Johnson & Neuman where he honed his craft as a trial attorney, focusing on municipal, employment, personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice and wrongful death actions for over 20 years. Sam has served as city attorney, prosecutor and municipal judge for numerous municipalities since 2002. In 2007, Sam joined the law firm of Stone, Leyton & Gershman, became partner and continued as a litigator and municipal attorney. In 2015, Sam formed his own firm and in 2019, Sam was chosen by the Honorable Wesley Bell to serve as Chief of Staff for the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. As Chief of Staff, Sam prosecuted criminal cases while overseeing an office of 163 employees. After serving the residents of St. Louis County for five years, in the summer of 2024, Sam joined the law firm of Dowd & Dowd as a partner to focus on his municipal clients and pursue claims of those suffering from discrimination at the workplace or injured by the carelessness and negligence of others. Currently, Sam is the city attorney and prosecutor at 5 municipalities. Sam has 3 kids, is a lifelong hockey player and coach and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Ladue Hockey Club.
